Three Shots of Espresso & a Vigorous Slap

I wake up every morning (except weekends) at 4:30. I have to leave my house by 5:20 to catch the train for work. It sucks. This also means that most days I am deliriously sleepy until about noon, at which point I wake up just enough to get some work done. (Sometimes that last part doesn’t happen.) It’s a problem.

Song I’m Obsessed with Today – ‘Big Man’ by Honeyhoney

Occasionally (all the time), I’ll find a song that really speaks to me. When that happens, that sucker stays on repeat for the better part of week.

Sometimes these are new songs and sometimes they’re old songs or artists that I have just discovered. I love sharing my new music finds with friends, especially if it’s a lesser known band!

So today, I want to share with you my current song obsession, Big Man, by Honeyhoney. It’s off of their new album, 3, which just came out this month. If you haven’t heard of them before you should definitely go check them out. I love their music and am even going to see them next month!

They’re an awesome blend of folk, country, Americana, and rockabilly, reminiscent of Mumford & Sons, Johnny Cash, and The Avett Brothers.

Hope you love it as much as I do!

Grief Like An Ocean

The last few months have been an emotional tornado. My grandmother passed away at the end of April and since then the family has been, at best, silently and begrudgingly tolerating each other and, at worst, genuinely having a difficult time finding reasons to love and accept one another.

Admittedly, I am part of this emotional tornado. I have helped the vortex swirl faster and given it berth. I have said and done things that I shouldn’t have and in my own inconsolable grief and rage forgotten that everyone else around me is also hurting.

In the midst of another insomnia ridden night, I wrote the following, via the notebook app on my phone.

Welcome to the Family, Taco!

I had a pretty exciting end of the week and weekend!

I welcomed an adorable 8 month old kitty to my family and have lovingly doved him, Taco! My BFF, whom you may later meet on this blog if she ever gets busy and starts writing,  really, REALLY wanted me to call him Gandalf for his amazing gray fur (photo filters may have inhibited you seeing his true beauty), but I really like Taco, so Taco it is!!

Welcome to my crazy world Taco and may God have mercy! 🙂

My Writer’s Block is Worse Than Your Writer’s Block

This just in:

I have nothing to post this week! I was, for the first week, doing pretty well at being able to write a few things out and stagger them for a nice posting schedule. Unfortunately, I didn’t write anything this weekend and have had little luck finding much to write about since.

This could very well go back to my hyper-critical nature of my own writing (remember that post?). Well inner-critic be damned! I will write about having nothing to write about.

Ok, this is not entirely accurate… Continue reading

Let Go of What Doesn’t Make You Happy

f4d0d7919c6eb450d6115eda10440c39

I stumbled on this lovely graphic while browsing Pinterest the other day. Ok, that’s not 100% true. I saw a twitter post saying something about being present every day; then I searched ‘BE PRESENT’ on Pinterest. But for the sake of this post, yes, I “stumbled” on this graphic. Of all the other graphics and sayings that could be found, this one resonated with me the most. Not just because it was one of the first that I saw, but because it wasn’t pushing being outgoing, or an extrovert. It wasn’t praising traits that people often mistake for virtues rather than just attributes of a certain personality type. It’s simple, to the point, and insightful. It is all encompassing. It is enough.

I spend easily 80-90% of my day worrying about things that I have no control over. Worrying about things that happened over the weekend, two weeks ago, a month ago. Worrying about things that might happen tomorrow, someday… never. Perhaps worrying isn’t the correct term. Perhaps this is anxiety, fear or regret. Regardless, doing this doesn’t help me. It doesn’t have any bearing on the here and now. If anything, it distracts from the now. If anything, it is the reason why I am seldom ever 100% present in any moment as I’m living it.

Will Graphics Really Make this Post Any Better?

If you’ve read anything about the ‘How To’s’ of blogging, you know that it generally said that graphics make the post. If you want people to read what you’re writing, then – aside from good content – you should add some sort of graphic. In other words, people readers have short attention spans and need something pretty to look at.

Enter my questions. Is this true? Does anyone really care about the graphics? Sure, it makes your post look nice. Maybe adds a bit of pizzazz to it, but are we all so shallow as to not read a post just because there’s no corresponding picture?

To clarify, this is not a judgement, but rather an observation and a genuine question. Is a graphic in a post the equivalent of a book jacket? Can a good graphic make or break your post?
